Steve McQueen

"Shame is visual storytelling at its finest and tightest. Steve McQueen’s beautifully structured,  almost wordless opening suite establishes everything we need to know about our complex protagonist: he is reclusive, tortured, and lost. Of course, none of this would be possible without the cold, steely look that Sean Bobbitt’s camerawork supplies. His unrelenting long takes (now famous thanks to 12 Years a Slave) force us to sit and sympathize with Brandon and the weight of his addiction. Consequently, we go from judging Brandon’s actions at the beginning of the film to realizing a heartbreaking truth at the end: he is trapped."
